A KPI(s) Digest

For each Reporting made by a Planning Manager, the question about relevant and reliable KPI(s) remains open. The main reasons for that is "how to highlight and choose good indicators while requirements for follow up are various and different from a project to other.

To be efficient some work preparation could be necessary to identify all the inputs and outputs from the project #stakeholders (Top Management, Contracting Dept., Field Engineering Dept., Construction Teams, Cost, Commissioning Dept. ...).
Then ask yourself:
- What is the purpose of the chosen KPI(s)? (Why)
- How can I measure it? (How)
- Do we have some KPI(s) specifications noticed in any contractual procedure, so the PI(s) will be mandatory to be followed up?
- What about its efficiency?
- How much KPI(s) to adopt for project monitoring?

A KPI is commonly defined as something positive reflecting a benefit on the project as it’s close to “Progress”. We expect to make the right decision that fit with the global project strategy, so it means that a #KPI is linked to a positive context …
But in a case of “intention to claim or claim a subcontractor”, the studied indicator only focus on delays, discrepancies, lack of productivity, problems with mobilization plan, “planned vs. completed” and several negative aspects. Shall we talk in this case about a #K2I – Key Incompetence Indicators or a #KDI – Key Deficiency Indicators?
