"The Monthly Face-2-Face" - # March 2015

"MEASURING THE PHYSICAL PROGRESS "
After realizing the initial schedule, accepted and approved by #stakeholders, there is the equally difficult task of updating it and making it live. The basic input data of the #schedule are the actual start and end dates for completed activities, progress and estimated end dates for current activities.
If the accuracy of the recorded dates depends mainly on the rigor of the planner in the updates, the percentage of completion it, is much more complex to understand. It is indeed necessary to decide what kind of progress is the best indicated dependent on the nature of the project, the type of task to update, the level of detail of the planning.

If the progress in costs, progress in duration and #earned #value are other useful information and are necessary for the projectmanagement, it is certain that only the physical progress is the closest to the reality on the site. It helps to know where we are and where we are going by continuing with the same progression rate.
How to calculate the physical #progress? It depends on the required level of details and accuracy. The calculation method is directly related.
The methods of "0-100" and "50-100" are in my opinion the easiest to set up. The #physical #progress is 0% or 50% when the task is started and is 100% when the task is completed. The "told by expert" method is fairly simple, although being more subjective as it depends on the evaluation of an expert. Both of two methods avoid the planner to perform complicated calculations or relatively heavy settings of the planning tool. #Methods outlined above clearly have the advantage of providing relevant information with great simplicity if each task is considered individually. We reached the limits of these methods when we try to determine the overall progress of a group of tasks (recapitulative task) because of being a simple average of progress percentages constituting the group of these tasks. This information is very little representative of the reality on the site.
The most appropriate method for me, for giving a percentage of physical progress as fair as possibleremains the items weighted (#manhours #weighting) merged with the method of " equivalent unit " (using quantities: 20cum cleared of 60 cum initially budgeted represents 33.3% done), mergedwith the method of " 0-100 " or " 50-100 "and merged to a lesser extent with the method called "told by expert ".This combined method has the disadvantage of being a little more complex, but it gives very high quality information. Which project manager does not dream of having a percentage of completion that accurately reflects the reality on the site?
